Alexander Young Jackson

A.Y. Jackson   (1882-1974)

Alexander Young Jackson - the leading advocate for The Group of Seven is one of the most prolific and certainly one of the most important Canadian artists of the first half of the twentieth-century. He was born in Montral, Canada. In 1906, he began studying art at the Art Institute in Chicago. A year later he enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, to study impressionism with Jean-Paul Laurens, remaining in France until 1912. Group of Seven founding members Harris and MacDonald were sufficiently impressed by Jackson's work that, in 1913, they invited him to move to Toronto.

In 1919, he formally joined the Group of Seven and exhibited with them throughout the next decade. By 1941 he received an honorary doctorate from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. In 1967 he was made a companion of the Order of Canada – the highest honor bestowed on civilians for outstanding achievements and excellence. A.Y. Jackson was an outward looking artist, whose main concern was to record the landscape before him and reveal Canada to Canadians.

A.Y. Jackson paintings are part of museums and private collections all over the world.
