Octav Bancila (1872-1944) is widely regarded one of the most famous Romanian realist painters. Between 1894 and 1898, he lived and studied abroad: first in Italy and France, and finally in Germany, where he studied under Nicholaos Gysis at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. He worked for a while with Haschbe and Lenbach, and he had personal exhibitions with his artworks from that period. Upon his return he began exploring his major themes: the lives of peasants, factory workers, impoverished Jewish traders & artisans, conscripted soldiers, nomadic Roma people. His works also include portraits, landscapes, flowers and still life.
In 1907, following the crushing of the Romanian Peasants' Revolt, Bancila began traveling the country and attempting to gather evidence of government repression and violence. The result was a series of 15 paintings (not all of them surviving), including his famous figure of an old peasant standing open-armed ("Before 1907"), several images of dead bodies piled up in fields (being looked on by soldiers), and the eponymous 1907, depicting three ragged peasants running into rifle fire.
Between 1916-1937 he worked as a professor at the Fine Arts School in Iasi, Romania. Between 1908-1935 his painting have been part of solo or group exhibitions with the other great artists in that period: Gheorghe Petrașcu, Jean Alexandru Steriadi, Paul Verona, Ion Mateescu. In 1942 Octav Bancila is awarded the National Prize for Painting at Salonul Moldova.
Octav Bancila paintings are part of public museums and private collections all over the world.
